As the maritime industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its environmental footprint, digital tools play a crucial role in meeting evolving regulatory demands. For shipping companies navigating the European Union’s Emission Trading System (EU ETS), compliance and accurate emissions tracking are more essential than ever. Hecla Emissions Management AS identified this growing need and sought a technology partner to help develop an innovative solution tailored to the maritime sector.
According to The Economist Impact’s report, maritime shipping accounts for 80% of global trade and approximately 3% of worldwide emissions.
As environmental concerns grow, the European Union Emission Trading System (EU ETS) – the world’s leading carbon market – has introduced stricter compliance rules. Shipping companies must now manage their carbon allowances digitally and meet annual reporting obligations.
Hecla Emissions Management AS recognised the need for a streamlined digital solution for emissions tracking and compliance. To realise this vision, they partnered with Baltic Amadeus.
Baltic Amadeus created a user-friendly web application for Hecla, hosted on Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure. The solution was built using the .NET 7 framework and React, resulting in a responsive single-page application that streamlines the EU ETS compliance process.
Key features include secure authentication through Azure Active Directory B2C, supporting scalable user identity management. Interactive data dashboards allow users to visualise emissions data clearly through intuitive charts and text, while built-in reporting tools enable seamless export of information in PDF and Excel formats, making it easier to analyse, manage, and share compliance data.
The application leverages open-source technologies and adheres to industry’s best practices, ensuring both scalability and security. Microsoft Azure‘s cloud hosting enables the platform to handle fluctuating workloads efficiently while optimising operational costs. Enhanced protection is delivered through multi-factor authentication, which helps to mitigate threats such as brute-force and DDoS attacks. Additionally, the app development process followed secure coding standards, with automated security testing integrated into CI/CD pipelines and OWASP guidelines strictly observed.
By delivering a reliable and future-proof platform, Hecla and its clients are now better equipped to meet environmental regulations and take proactive steps in managing maritime emissions effectively.
