McKinsey‘s Global Data Transformation report points out that enterprises dedicate an average of 30% of their time to non-value-added tasks due to data quality and availability issues.
Rising data volume and complexity drive organisations to seek innovative solutions in modernising data warehouses and adopting advanced data governance systems.
Therefore, we are excited to showcase a case study detailing the successful implementation of a data warehouse (DWH) and Business Intelligence solution for the international tobacco company – JTI Baltic. Explore the project’s key highlights and outcomes now.
Established in 1999, JTI is a prominent global tobacco company in more than 130 countries. Since its establishment, it has evolved into one of the leading global tobacco producers renowned for its diverse portfolio of tobacco brands.
Due to outdated design principles and technologies, the legacy DWH solution resulted in reliability, scalability, and performance issues. This led to poor data quality, difficulties in system maintenance, and issues with adding new data sources. As a consequence, business users could not make valuable insights on time.
Therefore, JTI Baltic sought an IT partner to solve legacy DWH issues. Having a successful partnership experience with Baltic Amadeus, JTI Baltic decided to team up again to implement its DWH modernisation.
Collaborating with the client’s team, we designed a DWH and Business Intelligence solution to enhance IT capabilities in achieving the strategic objectives of JTI Baltic. The modernised DWH was based on modern architecture and Microsoft Azure cloud technologies.
Throughout the project, we conducted thorough analysis, documented requirements, identified potential gaps, and defined architecture with existing systems. This laid the groundwork for detailed project planning and eventual implementation.
Our team, comprising a senior data engineer, data analyst, and project manager, executed the solution’s architecture and setup. We developed the DWH, including a new data structure and ETL, implemented Master Data Services, managed data migration with Azure Data Factory, and redesigned Power BI reports.
The new DWH solution enhances data governance and quality, boosting the reliability and value of analytics. Additionally, the updated architecture and cloud services provide high performance, scalability, and flexibility.
Enabled with Business Intelligence, JTI Baltic can now effortlessly access Power BI reports, offering enhanced analysis, reporting, and distribution capabilities. This allows business users to create reports by themselves and make valuable business insights faster compared to the client’s previous reporting solution.
Overall, the completed DWH modernisation simplified IT maintenance and support and significantly reduced the required effort. This improvement ensures that implementing new data analytics reports or new data sources now takes less time, contributing to a more efficient and responsive system.
